Local transportation

ADO is the most comfortable public option for trips between Tulum, Cancún Airport, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid, Mérida and other regional destinations. The main Tulum terminal is in the center of town on Avenida Tulum. Reserve ahead for airport trips and busy travel dates.

• Buy tickets through ADO or at the terminal.
• Check the destination and terminal name carefully—some routes use Tulum Centro and others may stop near the ruins.
• Allow extra time when connecting to a flight.

Colectivos are shared passenger vans used by locals for frequent, lower-cost travel. They are useful along Highway 307 toward Playa del Carmen, with stops near places such as Akumal and other communities along the route. They normally leave when seats are available rather than following a reserved timetable.

• Carry small Mexican-peso bills and ask the fare before boarding.
• Tell the driver your stop when you enter and again as you approach it.
• Space for large luggage is limited; ADO is usually easier with suitcases.

The Tren Maya connects Tulum with destinations across the Yucatán Peninsula. Tulum station is outside the town center, so plan transportation to and from the station as part of the trip. Compare the complete journey—not only the train time—when deciding between rail and ADO.

• Use the official Tren Maya site for current schedules and tickets.
• Arrive early and keep your identification and ticket available.
• Confirm station transfers before travel; the station is not walkable from central Tulum or Edena.
