What to do during a police stop

Use this practical checklist if you are stopped by a traffic, municipal or state police officer in Tulum.

BEFORE YOU DRIVE

Carry valid documents.

01Rental registration card

If you rent a vehicle, make sure the rental company gives you its registration card and confirm that it is current.

02Driver’s license

Always carry a valid driver’s license with you when driving.

IF AN OFFICER STOPS YOU

Stay calm and document the interaction.

Ask the officer to identify themselves
Politely request the name or identifying information of the traffic, municipal or state police officer.

Locate the patrol-unit number
If the officer refuses to identify themselves—or from the moment the stop begins—note the patrol-unit number.

Begin recording
Record the interaction when it is safe to do so and gather relevant evidence.

Do not argue
Remain calm, avoid escalating the situation and do not physically resist.
