Going to a restaurant
A relaxed meal is easier when you know a few local basics—from reading the menu to choosing the currency on the card terminal.
Before you sit down
Ask about market-price dishes, portions, specials and anything without a listed price before ordering.
Ask whether bread, water, appetizers or tastings offered before the meal are complimentary.
If you reserved or saw a promotion, keep the confirmation and verify what is included when you arrive.

When ordering
For spirits, wine, seafood and specials, confirm the brand, size and price. Point to the exact item if language is a barrier, confirm the price before accepting an upgrade, and request separate checks early.
When the bill arrives
- 01Read each line
Match dishes, drinks and quantities to what your table ordered.
- 02Check the total
Look for duplicates, unfamiliar charges and the stated tax treatment.
- 03Look for servicio or propina
A tip in Mexico is voluntary and cannot be required or added without your consent. Ask what an existing service line means before adding another tip.
- 04Ask calmly
Point to any line in question and ask the server to explain or correct it before paying.
MXN
Pay by card in Mexican pesos
If the terminal offers MXN or your home currency, choose Mexican pesos (MXN). Your card network or bank then handles the conversion instead of the restaurant’s dynamic currency conversion.
- ✓ Confirm the terminal shows MXN.
- ✓ Compare the terminal amount with the bill.
- ✓ Approve only when the amount and currency are correct.
- ✓ Keep the receipt until the charge appears on your account.
TIPPING
You decide the tip
Tipping is customary and appreciated, but voluntary. Choose an amount based on the service. Many diners leave roughly 10–20%, on the terminal or in cash.
