Public safety in Tulum

Practical information to help visitors stay calm, make informed decisions and reach official assistance when it matters.

OFFICIAL CONTACTS

Save these numbers

These official services are more important than any social-media or WhatsApp group.

IF POLICE STOP YOU

Be respectful. Do not pay a bribe.

A traffic stop can be stressful, especially in another language. Stay calm and avoid escalating the interaction. Never offer, agree to or hand over an unofficial cash payment.

  1. 01
    Stop safely

Pull over in a well-lit or public place when possible. Keep your hands visible and avoid sudden movements.

  2. 02
    Ask for the reason

Politely ask which rule or alleged infraction applies. You may also ask for the officer’s name, badge number and patrol-car number.

  3. 03
    Request the official process

If a citation is warranted, ask for the written ticket and official payment instructions. Do not pay cash at the roadside or negotiate a smaller payment.

  4. 04
    Use official help

If you feel threatened, detained without explanation or pressured for money, do not physically resist. Call 911 or use Guest Assist when it is safe to do so.

  5. 05
    Record details safely

Note the time, location, officer information and what was said. Photograph documents or the patrol vehicle only when it is safe and does not escalate the situation.

DRIVING A RENTAL CAR

Tourist Mobility Pass

Quintana Roo’s official Guest Assist program offers a free digital Tourist Mobility Pass for eligible visitors driving registered rental vehicles.

Two courtesy events

The program can provide up to two courtesy tickets for eligible minor traffic infractions.

Not a free pass

It does not excuse serious conduct or replace a license, rental agreement, insurance or compliance with traffic laws.

Important exclusions

Benefits do not apply in circumstances such as impaired driving, certain prohibited parking, or crashes that damage people or property.

Keep the QR available

Register the driver and rental vehicle through Guest Assist, then save the generated pass where it can be opened during a stop.

Open official Guest Assist

Rules, eligibility and app availability can change. Check Guest Assist before driving and follow the instructions shown in the official program.

COMMUNITY REFERENCE

Local WhatsApp groups

These community groups may help visitors ask local questions or find general guidance. They are not police, legal counsel or emergency-response services.

Never wait for a WhatsApp response during an emergency—call 911. Do not post passport images, financial information, live accommodation details or other sensitive personal data in a public group.

EVERYDAY PRECAUTIONS

Simple habits reduce risk.

Transportation

Use established transportation providers, confirm the vehicle and fare before departing, and share trip details with someone you trust.

Money and valuables

Use ATMs inside banks or busy businesses, keep valuables out of sight and carry only the documents and cash you need.

Nighttime awareness

Stay in well-lit populated areas, avoid isolated roads and beaches after dark, and do not leave drinks unattended.

Documents

Keep secure digital copies of your passport, immigration documents, insurance and rental agreement separate from the originals.
